Press Release - Sybase

Sybase Previews Adaptive Server Anywhere for Next Generation Small Devices
Industry's First Application-Optimized Database for Light Weight Windows CE Business Devices

San Jose, CA, April 6, 1998 - Sybase, Inc. (Nasdaq: SYBS) today previewed a new small "fingerprint" deployment technology for Adaptive Server Anywhere that will extend the reach of corporate data to next-generation Windows CE devices. Sybase's new technology is the industry's first application-optimized, ultra small database that will make it possible to deliver corporate information to a new class of light weight mobile business devices such as the Palm PC and Auto PC, powered by the Microsoft Windows CE operating system. This technology expands Sybase's leadership position in the "occasionally connected" database market by addressing the fast-growing trend toward devices with smaller memory requirements.

This new technology will be offered as an option of Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere, the industry-leading database optimized for mobile computing. Sybase is demonstrating Adaptive Server Anywhere for Windows CE and its small €fingerprint€ deployment technology this week at the Microsoft Windows CE Developers Conference in San Jose.

"Sybase created the first small "footprint" database, enabling organizations to extend their enterprise information beyond corporate walls to mobile workers using laptop machines and Handheld PCs," said Terry Stepien, vice president and general manager, Workplace Database Division of Sybase. "With the emergence of even smaller and smarter devices, Sybase is the first to unveil correspondingly smaller "fingerprint" database technology so organizations can continue to extend the reach of business information to these new devices."

"Microsoft is committed to creating the Windows CE operating system for a broad range of mobile computing devices, such as Handheld PCs, Palm PCs, and Auto PCs," said Roger Gulrajani, group product manager in the Windows CE group at Microsoft Corporation. "We are excited by Sybase's announcement, as the delivery of corporate information is necessary to accelerate the adoption of these devices in the enterprise category."

Today's technology preview builds on Sybase's March 3, 1998 announcement of its intent to deliver Adaptive Server Anywhere for Windows CE to extend corporate information to Handheld PCs. The new deployment technology will allow organizations to customize the capabilities of the database to match the memory requirements of an application running on a small device. The customized database can have a memory "fingerprint" as small as 50K. Leveraging Sybase's replication technology, organizations will be able to seamlessly synchronize data across the enterprise, from small mobile devices to handheld PCs, desktop PCs, and enterprise servers.

"Sybase's Adaptive Server Anywhere for Windows CE will allow our salespeople to interact more efficiently and speed customer service," said Dan Stratton, database analyst at Quality Design Systems, makers of TireMaster. "Having access to corporate data via a handheld device enables our tire salepeople to be more flexible -- they can start work orders, log inventory and print bills and receipts regardless of whether they are in the store or at the parking lot, garages or even the side of the highway."

Sybase currently expects to ship a beta version of Adaptive Server Anywhere for Windows CE in the second quarter of 1998, with anticipated beta delivery of the small €fingerprint€ deployment option later this year.
